The type
of fuses used in this old board are of
the rewirable type.
-
Rewirable fuses do not offer
protection against electrocution due
to accidental contact with live
parts
-
Rewirable fuses are often mistakenly
repaired using ordinary wire or
wrong size fuse wire which could
result in a fire.
-
When a rewirable fuse "blows" it
will have to be repaired (assuming
there is fuse wire to hand) which is
a fiddly process

A modern fuse board
(or
consumer unit) uses M.C.B.'s (miniature
circuit breakers) to protect the
individual circuits.
-
M.C.B.'s are like switches that turn
off when a circuit becomes
overloaded or faulty.
-
M.C.B.'s are reset by simply
switching back on - no need to
rewire them.
-
17th
edition fuse boards incorporate two
R.C.D.'s (residual current devices)
which offer additional protection
against electrocution on all
circuits.
-
RCDs provide
protection by switching the current
off immediately. When electrical
leakage to earth exceeds as little
as 30mA (thirty thousandths of one
Amp), the RCD will switch off the
current within 40 milliseconds (less
time than a single heartbeat),
therefore turning off the
electricity before you receive a
harmful electric shock.

This is based on an installation for an average
house, if you have a larger electrical
installation that requires a bigger consumer
unit or have excessive/awkward cable runs for
the earth bonding this may incur
additional costs.
